Mourinho sacked, but who’s next in charge?

Jose Mourinho was sacked this morning a few miles down the road from myself at the Carrington Training ground. It may have come as a shock that it has been announced today, but it is not a shock that it is has finally happened after an awful start to the season.

Mourinho leaving Carrington this morning

A United statement said: “A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager. The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

The fans that watch United home and away have been excellent and have always supported the club on and off the pitch, but finally it has taken it’s toll with all of the recent poor performances.

Who will replace him though? These are the leading candidates:

Laurent Blanc
Zinedine Zidane
Michael Carrick
Ryan Giggs
Leonardo Jardim
Antonio Conte
Jupp Heynckes
Guus Hiddink
Lucien Favre
Mauricio Pochettino
Nicky Butt
Arsene Wenger
Eddie Howe
Paulo Sousa
Didier Deschamps

Everyone talking about Pochettino, yes why not, but why not scout Pochettino in 2013 when you knew Sir Alex was leaving? Southampton did and then Spurs poached him. There are plenty of managers out there, not that I know them all but surely Manchester United should, if you have a direction and know what style you should be playing then go and get them.

Scouting is an issue full stop, look at then ten players we have signed under Jose.

Eric Bailly – £30m from Villarreal, June 2016
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – free transfer, July 2016
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – £26.3m from Borussia Dortmund, July 2016
Paul Pogba – £89m from Juventus, August 2016
Victor Lindelof – £30.7m from Benfica, July 2017
Romelu Lukaku – £75m from Everton, July 2017
Nemanja Matic – £40m from Chelsea, August 2017
Alexis Sanchez – Part-exchange from Arsenal, January 2018
Diogo Dalot – £19m from Porto, June 2018
Fred – £52m from Shakhtar Donetsk, June 2018
Lee Grant – 1.5m from Stoke, July 2018

Don’t need a scout for them, you can watch all of them on TV week in week out.
