Since the departure of Mourinho and even before Solskjaer came in, the word on the street was that Pochettino would be the right man to be our new manager. From the moment Mourinho left, Spurs’ fans started to panic and you can understand why. I even got a text off an old friend of mine over Christmas, wishing me all the best but could United please not snatch Mauricio Pochettino from them?
My response to him was that I’d be happy for us to not jump straight in and get Pochettino, but to actually come up with a plan and strategy first to get the club back on track. I said as a Football Club, we (Manchester United) need to be heading in the right direction and then decide what type of manager we actually require at the club. Someone that will come in, have his own ideas but agree to the identity of Manchester United and then take us on from there. Whether that is Solskjaer, Nicky Butt or someone I’d not even heard of, but please do not just got out there and get a “big name” manager for the sake of it. Look where that has got us in recent times.
By the sounds of it, the vast majority of Spurs fans think Pochettino will stay them. Why would he you may ask? Well, they have the brand new stadium which does look amazing and that will certainly kick Spurs on to another level for sure. That reason alone is a major factor, but their fans would also be most surprised if he jumped ship after convincing most, if not all, of his top players to sign new contracts.
I agree in a way, it does makes sense for Pochettino to stay, the new stadium is a massive thing and it can surely only send the club in one direction and that is up. Of course though, having the right players is key and at Spurs they do have them and the players are signed up on new long-term contracts now as mentioned. However, in my opinion those Spurs players do need to win some silverware of some sort, any trophy will do at the moment. Otherwise it’s going to be what, eleven years of improvement after improvement since Juande Ramos led them to a 2008 League Cup victory with nothing more to show for it.
As for Solskjaer, he could absolutely do the job at United, you can tell already he’s using his knowledge of the club in a very positive way. I’ve heard a lot said, and not just from United fans, that Mourinho should never have been our manager. As even at a club like us, Mourinho always believed that it was all about him in his head and not the club.
I was here nor there with Jose when he joined, I didn’t know what to think, but as always we backed him and did until his very last game because at the end of the team you support the team and club. Jose wasn’t the only problem, we all know that, Woodward is a major issue ‘football’ wise but some players didn’t help either. As for future, who knows, but Solskjaer is absolutely the right move at the moment and whilst Ole’s at the wheel the club hopefully plans for future correctly.
