Real Sociedad 0 v Manchester United 4. A fully professional performance from United tonight against a team that is doing well in La Liga, but ultimately struggled with every attack from us this evening.
Sociedad started very brightly in Turin with two good chances in the opening minutes and United with one also. The usual start from United unfortunately with us looking not switched on from the first whistle. An issue I’ve mentioned before and that still needs to be addressed, with whoever is starting in our defence.
Once settled though, we never looked back and put in a great display of football away from home in Europe. Sociedad had the majority of the ball of course, but when we got hold of it and attacked we looked dangerous every single time and could have scored more than four in the end.
Player wise, I thought Dan James was excellent, not just going forward, his work rate all night to get back and win tackles was impressive. Rashford will again have his critics for his finishing and decision making, I don’t disagree, but I’m more than happy to give the lad time to continue learn in front of goal. His passing and his runs to beat the offside trap were superb tonight though and he deserves credit for that alone, because he has been guilty many a time recently for not timing his runs.
Quality performance though and even more pleasing is the chance to rest players next Thursday in the return leg at Old Trafford ahead of the Chelsea away game the following Sunday.
