Manchester United 2 v Aston Villa 1. In a fitting tribute to former manager of both United and Villa, Tommy ‘The Doc’ Docherty would have enjoyed that game last night. As both sides played great attacking football in what was a brilliant match to watch.
In ’77 it was Docherty and I wasn’t even 1 year old, Atkinson will make it ’83 and he did as I celebrated my first time watching United win a trophy. That’s right, I never saw United play under Docherty but through my dad, older United fans, watching old videos and reading plenty of books I’ve come to appreciate his football style during his 5 years at United.
From the off we started brightly with quick balls forward and chances created, but twenty minutes in Villa started to dominate themselves. Thankfully a great bit of skill from Pogba started a quick attacking move that saw Martial head in Wan-Bissaka’s cross.
Just like the first-half, the second-half swayed both ways with Grealish at the heart of everything for Villa as they pegged United back with good penetrative football. Villa certainly were one of the better footballing sides we have played this season, but United continued to create too and saw out the win and another 3 points as we continue to improve.
Happy New Year, stay safe and lets continue to back Ole and the team. Enjoy Phil’s podcast:
