Straight Fred or yellow card? – Podcast #136

Manchester United 1 vs Paris Saint-Germain 3. I think the vast majority of us would agree that Fred was very lucky not to get a straight red card in the first-half last night.

Yes, PSG’s Leandro Paredes made the most of it and went down very easily, but at the end of the day, rules are rules and you cannot put your head into an opponent’s face.

What came as more of a surprise was that Fred was not actually substituted by Ole at half-time, after at least two more first-half instances where he could have picked up other yellow cards. The risk then was always going to be there second-half and you knew PSG would target him as well. Ole trusted Fred not to get booked again, but should he have?

Game wise, it was a poor first-half overall for United with PSG having by far the best of the action, especially in the opening 25 minutes and United were lucky to still be in the game come half-time. Second-half though, United were excellent and created chance after chance and should have been a few goals up.

United didn’t take their numerous clear cut chances though and then in the space of a couple of minutes, PSG scored and Fred was sent off. Game management was required from Ole last night and I’m sure privately he’ll regret not taking Fred off, despite what he said in his post-match interview.
